According to forecasts, real winter weather is expected this week: cold temperatures, snowfall, and in some areas sleet may make travel difficult. The changed weather and road conditions require increased attention, patience, and proper preparation from everyone.

Poor visibility, early darkness, and slippery roads significantly increase the risk of accidents. Visibility is extremely important: in the dark and in conditions of limited visibility, pedestrians and cyclists outside populated areas are required to wear reflective vests. Drivers should pay extra attention to pedestrians who step onto the road without looking, especially near crosswalks, schools, and bus stops, as they are often difficult to see due to their dark clothing.

You should drive more slowly and carefully on the slippery roads, as braking distances are generally longer, so it is advised to keep a greater following distance.

Drivers must inspect and prepare their vehicles properly: it is essential to check the battery, tires, lights, and brake system. Use winter tires when driving on slippery, icy roads!  Other important equipment for winter driving include properly functioning windshield wipers, an ice scraper, de-icing spray, appropriate windshield washer fluid or defogger, and adequate lighting. For longer trips, you may also need a blanket, winter clothing, a shovel (to dig your car out of snow), a flexible tow rope, de-icing fluid, and sufficient food and drink. In case of heavy snowfall, it may also be advisable to use snow chains.

Before departing, it is worth checking the current weather and road conditions, and making sure your cell phones are fully charged.

Individual responsibility plays a key role in winter driving: all drivers must consider whether it is truly safe to depart, taking into account the weather and road conditions. In addition to following the advice above, the driver's physical and mental state at the time also affects driving safety. Making a responsible decision often means postponing departure or choosing an alternative solution.

Taking the severe cold weather into consideration, please pay extra attention to lonely, elderly people! If you see someone in a public place who needs help, do not walk past them, but notify the appropriate authorities.
